End of Season Motorhome Checklist
If you’re preparing your motorhome for winter, it can take time.
There’s often a lot to do and it can be very easy to forget certain steps, which can lead to disaster.
That’s why we’ve created this list of end-of-season checks to ensure that your motorhome is in the best possible condition come the spring.
Preparing now could save you some unpleasant surprises and reduce the chances of having to make an unwanted claim on your insurance.
Electrics
- Remove all valuable items and electronics to keep away thieves and help avoid damage by cold and damp.
Cleaning
- Thoroughly clean cupboards and other places where food has been stored. Even minute crumbs could attract vermin or lead to an unpleasant smell if left for too long.
- Clean the fridge thoroughly using disinfectant. Leave the fridge door slightly ajar for ventilation, it’ll help it stop smelling.
- Clean the hob and oven and leave small cupboard doors slightly open for ventilation too. Close larger doors to prevent warping.
Water
- Drain the water heater and ensure no water is left inside.
- Flush out any water pipes with sterilising fluid and do the same to any waste pipes using a stronger disinfectant.
- Taps can be left open, but pop plugs into the drains to stop unwanted smells and insects crawling up pipes.
- Empty and sterilise the toilet.
Protection
- Invest in vent covers to prevent small animals and insects from getting into your motorhome.
- Contemplate using a motorhome cover to shelter your vehicle from the elements.
Gas
- Disconnect gas cylinders and store them away in a cool and well-ventilated location for safety.
Furnishings
- Remove any furnishings such as curtains and cushions to prevent mould and fading in the sunlight. This can also help to prevent theft as potential robbers can see that valuables have been removed.
- Remove all bedding, duvets and pillows.
- Consider standing the mattress up on its side to let the air circulate around it.
Exterior Care
- Thoroughly wash down the outside of your motorhome to remove any mud and salt to prevent corrosion.
- Examine it for any wear and tear and make any necessary repairs before storing it away.
- Prevent your window rubbers from sticking by spraying them with a silicone spray.
Mechanical Maintenance
- If your motorhome is not parked on a slope, check the wheels and release the handbrake.
- Fit a good wheel lock to aid security and reduce the risk of needing to make a claim on your motorhome insurance. If possible, turn the wheels occasionally to prevent the tyres from getting a fat spot.
Think About Security
- Try to fit an alarm system or tracker to alert you if there’s a problem.
- Remember to replace the batteries for battery-powered alarms.
Preparing now could save you some unpleasant surprises and reduce the chances of having to make an unwanted claim on your insurance.
