Doncaster (/ˈdɒŋkəstər/, /-kæs-/[1][2]) is a large minster town[3][4][5] in South Yorkshire, England, named after the River Don, which flows through the town. It is the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster and the second largest in South Yorkshire after Sheffield. Founded by the Romans, Doncaster is a major regional hub with good transport, heritage sites and recreation centres. It is also considered a market town due to its large market centre and market charter status from medieval times. In the 2011 census the town of Doncaster (identified as the built-up area subdivision) had a population of 109,805,[6] while the wider built-up area had a population of 158,141.[7]
The international Doncaster Sheffield Airport is at Finningley 6 miles (10 km) away. Sheffield lies 17 miles (27 km) south-west, Leeds 25 miles (40 km) north-west, York 30 miles (48 km) to the north, Hull 36 miles (58 km) north-east, and Lincoln 32 miles (51 km) south-east. Doncaster's suburbs include Armthorpe, Bessacarr and Sprotbrough. The towns of Mexborough, Conisbrough, Hatfield and Stainforth, among others, are only a short distance away within the metropolitan borough. Its satellite towns, such as Epworth and Haxey extend onto the Isle of Axholme in Lincolnshire to the east.
Central Doncaster's historic listed buildings include the Mansion House. The Waterdale district has regenerated round Sir Nigel Gresley Square. The Lakeside development about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-east of the centre contains The Dome (arena and leisure centre), a shopping centre, restaurants and a cinema round a circular lake.
